Therapeutic Yoga as Somatic Resourcing

The practice of movement and yoga offers an opportunity to shift our focus and awareness inward.

Therapeutic yoga is a holistic approach that utilizes techniques and practices to create an environment that supports the body, mind, and spirit in the process of healing.

The practice creates a deeply rejuvenating experience through the many postures that literally hold you as you let go. As our senses are drawn within, the practice becomes a meditation naturally leading to self-exploration and discovery. The space we are creating together is all about slowing down and opening your body.

In brief tranquil moments when the senses are relaxed and responsive, when the heart is easy, and the mind light, we can hear the voice of silent space speaking …. Awareness responds, and the blessing of healing and knowledge flows forth.

A unique aspect of this workshop is looking at the postures through a somatic lens and integrating Internal Family System (IFS) techniques.

IFS focuses on understanding and healing the different “parts” or subpersonalities within an individual. The core idea of IFS is that the mind is made up of various parts, each with its own feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, and that these parts can be understood and integrated to promote psychological well-being.

Working with parts can create space to connect with the SELF. The Self is the authentic  and unburdened aspect of our being. Healing occurs when the Self leads the internal system, helping to heal and integrate the various parts. When the Self is in charge, the person experiences inner harmony and balance.

And how do we achieve this? 

We can achieve this together by working with somatic mapping or cycle of integration and change. The foundational elements that would hold the practice are as follows…….

  • Embodied Awareness – What am I aware of in my body right now? What can I track and observe? How do I attend and what do I attend to? How does socialization (bias, judgements, etc.) inform awareness?
  • Sensing/Feeling – Invitation to go into the sensations and feelings rather than just observe or notice them. How is that? How to safely maneuver into and out of sensation. Learning how to discern between paying attention and tracking sensations and fully embodying sensation, feeling, and emotion.
  • Embodied Insight – What does all this mean for me and my life? How do I distill what just happened in the previous phase? Listening to the body vs interpreting with the mind.
  • Action/ Integration – What do I do about it? How do I embody this new change? What prevents me from new actions? What fears and barriers arise? What allies or support do I need to align with in order to manifest new actions?


My goal here is
guiding each person to their felt sense of the body and to support the uncovering of embodied relational and behavioral patterns, as well as their underlying strategy.
