As a somatic provider, most of the clients I have had the opportunity to work with have either never heard of Somatics or have had a very limiting understanding of what it is.
Somatics is more than a buzzword—it’s a profound and transformative approach to healing that centers the body as an intelligent and essential part of our emotional and psychological well-being. While traditional therapeutic approaches often emphasize cognitive insight or behavior modification, somatic work invites us to include the felt sense—the sensations, impulses, and movements of the body—as vital data in the healing process.
So, what is Somatics?
The term “somatics” comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the living body known from within.” Rather than seeing the body as separate from the mind, Somatics views our physical sensations, posture, breath, and movement as expressions of our inner experience.
In essence, Somatics is the study and practice of embodied awareness. It teaches us to listen to the body—not just for physical health but for insight, regulation, and transformation.
This approach recognizes that trauma, stress, and life experiences are not just “in our heads”—they are also stored in our bodies. Patterns of tension, numbness, disconnection, or reactivity often point to deeper stories and unresolved experiences that talking alone may not fully reach.
Somatics in Practice
Somatic work can look different depending on the practitioner and modality, but it often includes:
- Body awareness exercises (noticing breath, tension, posture, sensation)
- Movement or gesture (releasing or expressing what words may not)
- Touch-based or hands-on techniques (when appropriate and consensual)
- Nervous system education and regulation
- Tracking and integrating emotional and somatic patterns
Clients might be guided to notice the tightness in their chest when they speak about a particular event, or to explore the impulse to move, shake, or breathe more deeply. These small awarenesses can open the door to significant shifts in how someone processes and heals from past experiences.
Why Somatics?
Many people come to somatic work after years of talk therapy or personal development, sensing there’s something more—a deeper layer of healing that hasn’t yet been accessed. That “more” is often found in the body.
Somatics helps clients:
- Reconnect with their body’s innate wisdom
- Understand and regulate their nervous system
- Release long-held trauma and patterns
- Cultivate resilience, presence, and self-trust
- Experience a more authentic and grounded sense of self
It’s Not About “Fixing”—It’s About Listening
One of the most powerful aspects of Somatics is that it doesn’t treat the body like a problem to fix, but a teacher to learn from. When we slow down and truly listen, the body often reveals exactly what we need to heal.
Whether someone is dealing with anxiety, trauma, burnout, chronic tension, or a sense of disconnection, Somatics offers a pathway that includes—not bypasses—the wisdom of the body.
